TASH
TASH is an international membership association leading the way to inclusive communities through research, education, and advocacy. TASH members are people with disabilities, family members, fellow citizens, advocates, and professionals working together to create change and build capacity so that all people, no matter their perceived level of disability, are included in all aspects of society. We have twenty-five chapters and thousands of members from thirty-four different countries and territories. Since our inception over thirty years ago, TASH has gained international acclaim for our uncompromising stand against separatism, stigmatization, abuse and neglect. We actively promote the full inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities in all aspects of life. TASH believes that no one with a disability should be forced to live, work, or learn in a segregated setting; that all individuals deserve the right to direct their own lives. TASH ‘s mission is to eliminate physical and social obstacles that prevent equity, diversity, and quality of life.

United Nations Statistics on Human Functioning and Disability
Human functioning and disability Introduction | Statistics | Standards and methods | Meetings The demand for statistics on human functioning and disability has greatly increased following the International Year of Disabled Persons (1981), the adoption of the United Nations World Programme of Action Concerning Disabled Persons (1982), and the release of the Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (1993). The World Programme of Action specifically requested the United Nations to develop systems for the regular collection and dissemination of information on disability. The questionnaire on Human Functioning and Disability Statistics was subsequently developed based on recommendations and decisions by expert group meetings and the United Nations Statistical Commission. In March 2006 the United Nations Statistics Division initiated a systematic and regular collection of basic statistics on disability through the existing Demographic Yearbook data collection system. This web site is a statistical reference and guide to the standards and methods and available data on human functioning and disability.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association of United States
The Muscular Dystrophy Association is a voluntary health agency — a dedicated partnership between scientists and concerned citizens aimed at conquering neuromuscular diseases that affect more than a million Americans. MDA combats neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive medical and community services, and far-reaching professional and public health education. With national headquarters in Tucson, MDA has more than 200 offices across the country, sponsors 230 hospital-affiliated clinics and supports nearly 400 research projects around the world. MDA supports more research on neuromuscular diseases than any other private-sector organization in the world. MDA scientists are in the forefront of gene therapy research and have uncovered the genetic defects responsible for several forms of muscular dystrophy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease), childhood spinal muscular atrophy, and several other neuromuscular conditions. The Association’s comprehensive service program includes medical examinations, flu shots, support groups, MDA summer camps for youngsters and assistance with purchase of wheelchairs and leg braces. MDA was created in 1950 by a group of adults with muscular dystrophy, parents of children with muscular dystrophy, and a physician-scientist studying the disorder. Since its earliest days it has been energized by its number-one volunteer and national chairman, entertainer Jerry Lewis. The Association’s programs are funded almost entirely by individual private contributors. MDA seeks no government grants, United Way funding or fees from those it serves.
